You spoke; we’re listening: 2007 Alumni Survey results

Last summer, we asked Education alumni to tell us what you liked - and didn't like - about the Faculty of Education's alumni publications and other activities. We also asked you what issues were important to you and the kind of alumni initiatives you'd like to see in the future. Over 115 alumni responded to the 2007 Education Alumni Survey online - our largest response rate ever for a faculty alumni survey. Those who responded told us they'd like more news on current issues and trends in education along with more information on new resources, professional development opportunities, conference announcement and other events. Faculty mourns the death of Michael Pyryt

The Faculty of Education has lost a passionate champion of gifted children with the death of Dr. Michael Pyryt, director of the faculty’s Centre for Gifted Education. Michael died suddenly on January 15, 2008 in Calgary upon his return from a trip to Australia. He became the centre’s director in 2000. Under his leadership, it has grown into a major international centre for the study of gifted children and their educational needs. He guided the establishment of academic talent searches, summer camps and workshops, and the assembly of resources to support thousands of gifted children, and their families and educators, in Calgary, in Alberta and internationally. Michael’s family has established the Dr. Michael C. Pyryt Memorial Fund to help support the work of the Centre for Gifted Education. APSY offers schools, divisions new PD option in special and inclusive education

APSY offers schools, divisions new PD option in special and inclusive education

The faculty’s division of applied psychology (APSY) has launched Partnerships for Teacher Professional Development, a cohort model for the delivery of its post-graduate professional diploma in inclusive and special education. The model offers schools and school divisions an innovative professional development option for building staff capacity in this area while giving individual teachers the opportunity to work alone and/or collaboratively on projects and assignments that match their personal and professional interests in inclusive and special education. In partnership with APSY, schools and school divisions can tailor the diploma to their specific areas of need or to a specific cohort of teachers identified by the school or division. School/divisions can sponsor teachers for this diploma or use their PD funding. Applications from individual teachers not associated with a partnership cohort are also welcome.  Regardless of the option chosen, the diploma can be completed in as little as 16 months. This program is delivered 100 per cent online with opportunities for students to meet, on-campus or on-site, with course instructors.   For more information contact Dr. Ken Ryba at karyba@ucalgary.ca or 403-220-2808.
